About

Hello, my name is Alex Fleming. Welcome to my blog.

East Africa, Sweden, France and deprived areas of England have been my main areas of work over the last 50 years.  English as a foreign language (EFL) has been my speciality throughout, but after returning to Britain I have also taught French and maths up to A-level.

I am now disabled, suffering from MS and so my teaching is very limited.  I write poetry and have tried my hand at a couple of books.  One is an autobiography called “Left to Write” and the other is a faction piece called “Sorts of Loving”. The latter comprises a dozen or so fictional characters based in and around Lancashire who are bound together by two factual events …………. the M62 bomb and the New York air-crash, both in the early 70’s.

During my previous stay in East Africa, I was also a regular columnist for the Daily Nation, one of Kenya’s national papers.

I’ve gone through life being the first guy to eat a juke box (not really!!), doing exactly what I want when I think it’s right, saying what I think needs to be said but never wishing to hurt anyone unless I feel that that is necessary.

My MS seems to have really clicked in now and I have thought “Good Lord! I’m actually 73 now. A quarter of my contemporaries will be dead, a quarter might as well be, another quarter don’t know that computers exist……..I must read the obituaries and see if it’s worthwhile opening a blog.

Feel free to browse the site. If your browser shows a “toggle menu” button at the top right, clicking it will reveal a menu showing examples of my work to date. I am very keen to correspond with people who’d like to get in touch. Please do so through the contact form on this site. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for taking the time to read, I hope your interest is piqued.

Alex.
